Google unveiled numerous applications and products during this year’s I/O conference, including an update to one of the most well-known apps in the whole Play Store. The internet giant showcased a complete overhaul of the Google+ Photos, which is now called Google Photos after branching out from the social media site. Many changes came to the Android application to which attendants of the Google I/O 2015 responded in an extremely positive way. Something that wasn’t under the spotlight during the conference was the desktop companion of the Photos app, which would allow users to backup photos from more devices and not just their smartphones. Google did mention that the desktop variant of the Photos app was coming, but didn’t talk about an exact release date. Today, the internet giant silently made public the desktop version of the popular Photos service.
Google made sure to cover all your photography needs with the new Photos app, as it gives you a more than decent way to easily backup all of your photos to the cloud, so you can access it without any hassle from any device, now including your own desktop. The company behind the newly updated application also gave users unlimited storage for all their photos, but with a small limitation to 16MP, this means that if you upload a new picture from your DSLR camera, it won’t take any major hits in resolution, but it won’t be uploaded at full scale. Luckily, Google also lets users upload photos with their original resolution, these full resolution photos will add up to your Google Drive storage, so be selective with the photos you upload at full resolution.
In order to start using the desktop version of Google Photos, you have to first download the application from photos.google.com/apps and select “Desktop Uploader” from the left side of the screen; the application will then begin to download and should be installed. To begin uploading your photos, sign into your Google account; after you successfully login, you will be prompted with a window asking which folders you wish to upload. Once you select the desired folders, all the included photographs will be quickly uploaded to the cloud.
