Qualcomm has already announced its upcoming Snapdragon 820 mobile chipset during this year’s MWC, but didn’t reveal too much about it. Propitiously, details about the upcoming CPU have already begun surfacing. Just recently, new details about the next iteration of the powerful Snapdragon chipset family were leaked, including a relatively new technology that will be included with the new chip, called Kryo. This new technology is Qualcomm’s cooling solution to one of the main issues with the current Snapdragon 810, which temperature quickly rose even when doing undemanding tasks. Although Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820 CPU chipset is still far from release, a South Korean anonymous source has made public several specific attributes of the Snapdragon 820. This leaked information comes after the processor was tested with the GeekBench application, which is used to benchmark processors. After the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 was put to the test, the results were only available for a few minutes before being deleted, fortunately, someone managed to capture several screenshots with the CPU’s results.

The leaked GeekBench test results, demonstrated that the Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) is a better performer than the Exynos 7420 processor when tested for a single core. The Snapdragon 820 managed to score 1732 points, whereas the Exynos 7420 got 1486 points. Unfortunately for Qualcomm, the multi-core test yielded different results; during this test, the Exynos 7420 came victorious with 5248 points, against the Snapdragon 820, which only scored 4970 points. Although the scores earned by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 weren’t by any means low, there is not a significant difference from Samsung-owned Exynos chipset. When comparing the Snapdragon 820 results, to the ones obtained by the Snapdragon 810, the improvements are marginally large. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 received a mere 1227 points in single-core and 4424 points in multi-core; both results are notably under the Snapdragon 820, which is a great thing for Qualcomm.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 will supposedly fix and improve upon the Snapdragon 810, which even if praised as an extremely powerful chip, it wasn’t free of issues. With the recent hits the company has taken, such as Samsung opting to include their own Exynos chipsets into the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Qualcomm has to launch a new CPU to bring them back to being the preferred chip manufacturer by major OEMs.
