Motorola DROID Turbo owners and Verizon customers have been sitting on the edge of the field watching everyone else enjoy Android Lollipop for some time, and finally it looks like the wait is over as Motorola officially announced yesterday that the soak test was beginning today for DROID Turbo users, while some users started seeing the soak test update alert for the Android 5.1 software as early as yesterday evening around 5pm. Like with other previous handsets in Motorola’s lineup, the success of the soak test would determine when the official over-the-air software update would be rolling out to all people who own the DROID Turbo, According to Verizon and Droid Life, that time will be tomorrow, July 1st for when the software push is going to start.
What this means for users of the device who have not been or will not be included in the soak test, is that the software could be hitting your device tomorrow. Since the OTA push begins tomorrow, some users will receive the update alert, but this does not mean that every DROID Turbo device will update tomorrow to Android 5.1 Lollipop. With things being staggered like this, it could still be a few days before some users see the software update hit their device, it will all depend on region as Verizon is most likely going to be pushing the software to some areas before others then move down the list to new areas as things complete.
With our earlier post we went over the fact that Motorola had confirmed the soak test was in full swing, and Motorola posted their full changelog for the software update to discuss the changes that would be seen on the device. Verizon Wireless has also now posted their changelog which should highlight things on a more carrier specific level as opposed to the general Lollipop changes. Among these changes are Device Protection, App Pinning, a new Ambient Display option, tons of Material Design, Trusted Devices and some optimization upgrades for apps just to name a few. If you have a DROID Turbo and are awaiting this update to come through, keep an eye on your status bar for the software update alert or just head into the settings menu and check for the update manually.
