Android users have many things to expect in the summer season, from updates to their OS to get them up to date with the latest features and firmware to getting leak after leak to hype up the release of the upcoming fall flagships. But, since last year’s Google I/O developer conference, Nexus owners have gotten an extra thing to look forward to, in the form of an early version, a developer preview, of the upcoming Android OS update. Last year, we got to play with and update our apps to match Android L, and this year we were greeted with Android M, a yet-unnamed update to the OS many love. And today, after days of spamming the Internet full of ‘where’s our update, Google!?’, Nexus users are now able to install the second developer preview of Android M.
This second developer preview, as with the first, is not meant to be the full update and has a higher-than-usual chance to be broken in key and essential ways and parts of the OS. These are meant for developers to be able to test new builds and versions of their apps to get them ready to launch right away and fit right in, taking full advantage of the various new features and APIs that M will have in its full release later this year. But for those developers, and eager fans, the second update is here, available to download from Google’s developer site. The devices, just as with the first preview, are limited to the Nexuses 5, 6, 9 Wi-Fi model, and Player, to get the full form factor spectrum covered. The process is the same as installing the last version of the preview, so it shouldn’t trip anyone up who’s been around the track before.
This version of M’s developer preview looks to have build number MPZ79M, coming from the first one’s MPZ44Q, so it will likely feature some of the major bugs from the first release being fixed, possibly replaced by newer or more specific bugs, but that’s the point of it being a preview, right? And as far as future updates to the M preview are concerned, we have one more due out by ‘late July, early August’, followed by the full final release of Android M, as well as its name in the third quarter.
