As part of their Uncarrier Amped announcement today, T-Mobile is redoing on of their popular Uncarrier announcements which was Simply Global. What Simply Global allowed you to do was to travel to over 120 different countries and still use your phone. However, you were stuck with unlimited EDGE data, which is pretty darn slow, especially if you’re used to LTE here in the States. You could still buy high-speed data packages, but that gets pricey real quick. So this was a great plan, and I actually used it quite often. In fact, when I was in Canada a few weeks ago I used it.
Today, the company has announced some enhancements to this Uncarrier move. It’s called “Mobile without Borders”. So now when you travel to Mexico or Canada you will be able to make calls as part of your Simple Choice plan, as well as roam on 4G LTE data in those two countries. And it’s unlimited. So there are no overage fees, no roaming fees, no fees at all to use your phone in Mexico or Canada. Which is fantastic. As T-Mobile notes in their press release, about 55% of international travel from the US goes to either Canada or Mexico. And as someone that lives near the Canadian border and goes into Windsor quite often, this is a welcomed addition to T-Mobile’s Uncarrier moves.
“After spending billions buying up Mexican telecoms, AT&T’s CEO is promising ‘the first seamless network covering Mexico and the U.S.,’ something ‘unique’ that ‘nobody else will be able to do for the consumer.’ So much for that. They won’t be the first. And they won’t offer Canada for free,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “We’ve done this the Un-carrier way − reaching across borders, partnering with leading providers offering the best LTE networks, creating a simple solution right now − then not charging a penny more for it.”
You may have heard that AT&T did buy up a couple of carriers in Mexico, and they are spending a whole lot of cash to get those networks up to speed in Mexico. While T-Mobile is getting their own seamless network in Mexico and Canada just with the flip of a switch. This is probably a much better, and more liked Uncarrier Amped move than Jump on Demand was last week.
