Yesterday, Google officially announced the next version of Android. Well they announced the name and version number. We knew most of what was new already thanks to the preview at Google I/O a few months ago. In addition to unveiling the newest statue on the lawn outside of building 43, Google also released the third and final developer preview for Android M or Android 6.0 Marshmallow. this third developer preview is said to be almost a near final version of the OS, that will be released this fall. So we’ve been digging around to see what’s inside.
Additionally, we posted a video of the Android Marshmallow boot animation – which you can see at the bottom of this post – and it looks a lot like what Android Wear has. Now a developer over on XDA has put that boot animation into an APK. So you can install the APK and get that boot animation onto your device without actually flashing the Marshmallow developer preview. Which is a pretty cool thing. Now, while this is an APK, you do still need to be running on an AOSP ROM, whether that’s CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android or another AOSP ROM, then the APK will indeed work and bring you the awesome new boot animation. Any ROM that has CM’s Theme Engine will work with the APK.
Alternatively, you could just flash the developer preview, if you have a Nexus. As the developer preview is a near final build, it should be much more stable this time around, compared to the first two developer previews. Marshmallow should be rolling out to devices later this fall. Likely around the end of September or early October, is when we expect to see Marshmallow’s official build start rolling out. As well as having the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 from LG and Huawei respectively, be announced. Which we can’t wait for that. We’ll likely be seeing a whole lot more leaks of both Nexus devices in the next few weeks, so you’ll want to keep it locked here for continuing coverage.
