It may be only Monday, but it seems that it is already a busy morning for Google. A report came through earlier this morning that Google were planning on unveiling the next Android statue at their Mountain View head office. This was very quickly followed by the news that Google had unveiled the statue as Android Marshmallow. As such, we now do know the name of the next version of Android. At the same time as unveiling the statue, the Android team also officially confirmed the name as Android Marshmallow and also confirmed that in terms of the number, this will be Android 6.0, following on from Lollipop’s Android 5.0.
Well, that was not the only confirmation that came from the Android team announcement. As well as the name change, Google also confirmed to the next preview version of Android M, Marshmallow is now available to download and install. This third review had been expected and it is known that this is the final preview before Marshmallow is released in its final form. However, it was not known as to when the preview would go live. For those interested, it now has and you can download the final preview and install.
However, as always there are caveats. Firstly, the preview is only available to Nexus devices. Not to mention, in terms of this final preview, it is currently only available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player. As well as the update being available, the blog posting also details that just like the previous previews, the OTA will begin shortly and will be sent to all supporting Nexus devices. For the developers, the official SDK for 6.0 has also become available and the Android Team has confirmed that apps looking to work on Android 6.0, the new API level for Marshmallow is level 23. Although, the team confirm this is the final preview, they also make note this is not intended for consumer use yet, so there could be bugs somewhere.
