Xiaomi has unveiled a new version of the company’s Android-based OS 6 days ago, along with the long-awaited Redmi Note 2 handset. The company has announced MIUI 7 OS in China at the time, and have said that the international launch will happen on August 19th in India, which is today. Well, Xiaomi has just wrapped up their press conference in India, and has unveiled MIUI 7 once again (along with new features). This time around we did get more info about the new variant of MIUI 7, and a ton of images and video material to take a look at. Without further ado, let’s check it out.
China’s number one smartphone OEM has kicked off the press conference by talking about the very beginnings of MIUI. This UI was announced on August 16th 2010, and now has 48 official ROMs by various MIUI developers, and 480 community ROMs. In 5 years, MIUI has grown quite a lot, over 150 million consumers are using MIUI now, and the UI is used in over 156 countries all over the world. Anyhow, let’s take a look at what features Xiaomi showcased at today’s launch event, shall we.
The first feature Xiaomi talked about is ‘System UIs’, as they call it. These are basically theme sets which will let you customize your phone the way you want it. There are four ‘System UIs’ available for you to choose from: Rose, Pink Blush, Ocean Breeze and High Life. You can check them out in the gallery down below if you’re interested. ‘Showtime’ is yet another new feature Xiaomi has introduced today. This feature will allow you to set animated videos for certain contacts, which you’ll be able to see when they call you. Keep in mind that it will be available in India only at first, and roll out to other areas soon.
‘Auto DND’ is a feature you can use in combination with your Mi Band fitness tracker, if you own one, of course. If a Mi Band detects you’re sleeping, it will automatically put the device in a Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, and silence your device. Once you wake up, the DND will be disabled. The ‘XXL Text’ is a feature which let you apply huge fonts on your smartphone, and Xiaomi promises your UI will remain fully functional afterwards because it’s optimized for such fonts. The ‘MIUI Data Saver’ is actually powered by Opera Max’s compression tech, which essentially means Xiaomi has partnered up with Opera. This option will be available worldwide in the coming month, and it will basically offer you data savings across all apps. Opera’s cloud compresses data, and can save you quite some cash as far as mobile data goes (up to 50% less data consumption).
The ‘Baby Album’ feature actually uses face recognition technology to identify babies and group their photos for you. This feature will also be available in India only first, and will hit other areas afterwards. The ‘Daily Lockscreen’ feature will automatically choose an image to put on your lockscreen, daily. This is yet another feature which will be available in India only for now. There you have it, those are all the MIUI 7 features showcased today by Xiaomi. The MIUI 7 will start rolling out on August 24th. You’ll be able to flash the MIUI 7 developer ROM on Redmi 1S, Redmi 2, Mi 3, 4, 4i and Redmi Note 3G/4G.
