Google Fiber is expanding its base across the length and breadth of the US, and that can only be good news for consumers in the country. In the latest announcement on the company’s official blog, Google has disclosed that it will be expanding its footprint further into the Lone Star State, after having made its presence felt in the city of Austin earlier. This is the first time since January of this year that the company has announced its plans to expand into newer territories, after having announced its intent to venture into Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Nashville TN and Raleigh-Durham, NC. The company already operates in neighboring Austin, TX and has also stepped into Kansas City (both sides of the state line, KCK and KC, MO) after having started tentatively with Provo, UT. The service could also potentially come to San Jose, CA; Portland, OR and Phoenix, AZ at some stage in the future, according to a roadmap from Google.

Announcing its decision on the official Google Fiber blog, the company said, “Fast growing cities need Internet speeds that can keep up with their progress. For the 1.4 million residents of San Antonio, one of the biggest and fastest growing cities in the country, this is truer than ever. Which is why, today, we’re proud to announce that Google Fiber is coming to San Antonio–the largest Fiber city to date”. The post went on to sing paeans to what it called the city’s ‘thriving tech landscape’, where numerous startups have flourished over the years. Google also goes on to claim that the company’s arrival will fuel job creation within the community and help lessen the existing digital divide as part of President Obama’s Connect Home initiative.

The planned expansion to San Antonio however, is still very much in its initial stage, and the company says, “Soon, we’ll enter the design phase of building our fiber network in San Antonio. We’ll work closely with city leaders over the next several months to plan the layout of over 4,000 miles of fiber-optic cables–enough to stretch to Canada and back–across the metro area. This is no small task, and it will take some time, but we can’t wait to get started”.
