Last year, Google launched Google Fit. Which was their attempt at fitness tracking. Now all of the Android Wear smartwatches have Google Fit, and other fitness tracking features, so this wasn’t a huge surprise to see Google Fit launch on Android. Google has made some improvements to the service since it launched late last year, including adding a website where you can view your steps and such. However the website was somewhat ugly, and not up to the material design guidelines. Until now.
There are a few material design aspects included here, which includes a floating Action button, as well as a side menu that slides out on top of other elements that are on the screen and information dense cards. These cards slide up over the stylized background as well. It looks really nice, actually. Better than Fitbit’s website, which is obviously their biggest competitor when it comes to fitness. The screen by default shows the user how many steps he/she have taken, as well as the calories burned, and recent activities. The floating action button allows you to add a new activity or to log your weight, which is pretty helpful. There are other cards there that show what you’ve done for that day, as well as what you did that month. Including whether you walked, ran or biked on that day. Not to mention it’s very colorful. An interesting card there shows how many miles (or kilometers depending on where in the world you are) you’ve walked, biked or ran this month.
Apparently this doesn’t appear to be a staged rollout. Something that other teams at Google love to do. You can head over to Google Fit’s website and take a look for yourself. We’ve grabbed some screenshots here, but they look empty. And that’s because I use a Fitbit instead of an Android Wear watch, so there’s nothing there for it to track. If you’re a Google Fit user, this is pretty exciting. It will be interesting to see if we get any updates on Fit at the September 29th Google event in San Francisco. Which was confirmed just last night.
