Google is going to be announcing the final version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow tomorrow at their event with the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Many were wondering when the new version of Android would begin rolling out to existing Nexus devices, and it looks like that may start as soon as October 5th. As far as the Nexus devices getting updated, it’s the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2013 and Nexus 9. So it looks like they are going as far back as two years old. Nice job Google. In addition to the OTA’s rolling out on October 5th, the code will also be heading to AOSP on the same day. So that the manufacturers and custom ROM makers can get their hand on the code pretty soon.
This lines up with leaks and rumors we’ve seen from Telus and other places recently. Showing that Android 6.0 Marshmallow would start its rollout on October 5th. So it seems pretty legit. But as always, we urge you to take this all with a grain of salt, until it’s announced tomorrow at Google’s San Francisco event. Which kicks off at 11am EST/8am PST. It’s not too surprising to see the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 10 not get the update to Android Marshmallow. While the hardware can definitely run the software, it’s more about if it is worth Google’s time. Google likely has some data about how many people have those devices, and obviously they deemed it not enough people to put the resources into optimizing Marshmallow for their 2012 portfolio. That was a great year for Nexus, wasn’t it?
The Nexus 5X will be up for pre-order tomorrow at $379, and the Nexus 6P for $499. Which is substantially cheaper than what the Nexus 6 was last fall. We’ll also likely be getting a new Chromecast as well as a Nexus Player. So it’s going to be an exciting day tomorrow for the most of us here in the Android world. You could say it’s an Android fanboy’s Christmas, as it really is.
