TELUS Says Android 6.0 Marshmallow Hits Nexus Devices Oct. 5th

Back when Android was just taking off, it appeared as if there was a new version of Android two-to-three times a year. Since the arrival of Android 4.4 KitKat however, things have slowed considerably, and with Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google had finally given it all the polish that an OS like this could ever need, but with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, announced during this year’s Google I/O conference, we’re getting some new features and extra polish this Fall. Nexus devices are always the first in line to receive big updates – despite Motorola and LG’s admirable attempt last year – and TELUS, the Canadian network, seems to think the rollout will start at the beginning of October, hitting the Nexus 6 and Nexus 5 on the same day.

On the TELUS community forums, a user has submitted what appears to be an official-looking table with updates for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 on October 5th listed with, simply, “Android M” listed in the description. Now, there’s a chance that these aren’t final dates, and TELUS themselves are saying that these are very much ‘approximated’ so this could be TELUS hedging their bets here, which wouldn’t surprise us. Still, after last year’s fairly chaotic update to Lollipop from Google, we’re sure they want to avoid that this year, and with more of an incremental update, they should be able to manage it. This date doesn’t look too far away from next week’s Nexus launch of September 29th, and would again make sense.

Each year when Google launches their new Nexus devices with their partners, they leave a little gap of say a week or two before they release the next version of Android into the wild. It’ll be interesting to see just how quick Google are this time around, and whether or not the updates roll out before the source code hits the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) for ROM builders to get working on update their wares. Next Tuesday is the big day, and we’ll have all of the news as we get it, so be sure to stick with us as we bring you the most of Nexus launch day.
