Google’s latest Android software version, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, received its official announcement last week, and today Google began uploading the factory images for Nexus devices. It’s also slated to begin tolling out to those Nexus devices over the air today although it may not reach every single Nexus user with those supported devices before the day is over as sometimes these software rollouts can take almost a week to reach everyone. This is of course, just for Nexus devices as the updates for non-Nexus phones will have to go through the same standard procedure as with every other Android version before it; through the manufacturers first, then to the carriers (if users are on a carrier version of the device), then to users.
The question for many users that don’t carry around a Nexus in their pocket as the phone of choice, is will my device get the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and how long will that be if it does? While there are still no exact dates for when any of the devices will receive the latest version of Android, at least a couple of the different major device OEM’s have confirmed updates for a number of the phones and tablets they have on offer. This includes Motorola and HTC, and potential devices from Samsung and LG who have yet to confirm anything about software updates for Marshmallow. As for which devices those are from those last two OEM’s that are most likely going to receive the update, this includes the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, as well as the more recently launched Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5. As for LG, we’ll likely see Marshmallow come to the LG G4 and LG G3, and potentially the more recently announced LG V10.
As for which devices have been confirmed to get the update, this includes the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2013 model, the Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player. For Motorola, consumers who own any of the following including the 2015 model of the Moto G (3rd Gen), the 2015 model of the Moto X Pure Edition, the Moto X Style, the Moto X Play, the 2014 model of the Moto X Pure Edition, the 2014 Moto X for Latin America, Europe, & Asia, the 2014 Moto G and Moto G LTE, the DROID Turbo, the 2014 Moto Maxx, and the 2014 Moto Turbo, can look forward to seeing the update to Android 6.0 at some point.
HTC has also confirmed a number of their devices will be getting the upgrade to Marshmallow, which includes their two most recent flagship devices the HTC One M9 and HTC One M8, both scheduled to receive the software by the end of this year. In addition, HTC has also confirmed Marshmallow updates for One M9+, the One E9+, the One E9, the One ME, the E8, the One M8 EYE, the Butterfly 3, the Desire 826, the Desire 820, and the Desire 816. As for which devices won’t be getting the update to Marshmallow, there is a small list of four devices which have been confirmed not to get the update, including HTC’s first flagship in the One M series, the One M7, as well as the Nexus 5, Nexus 10, and the Nexus 7 2012 models. If your device is included anywhere in this article than you mostly know for sure one way or the other if you’re going to see Marshmallow officially. If your device isn’t on this list, there’s still a chance you’ll get the update down the road at some point.
