Android How To: Edit Quick Settings in Marshmallow

Now that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is out and available to the public, it’s time to go over some new features in the update to Android 6.0. One of those includes the System UI Tuner. With the System UI Tuner enabled, you are able to edit the quick settings that are in the notification shade, as well as a few other goodies.

So to get started, you’ll need a device running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, of course. You will also need to pull down the notification shade then tap and hold the gear icon that is there for settings. Once that is done, you will see a new option inside Settings for the System UI Tuner. Inside there you will find options to edit the Quick Settings. Tap on the System UI Tuner which will be located underneath About Phone. A warning message will appear stating that this is fun for some but not fall all. Also states that these are experimental features and you could end up with a bug or two. Inside the System UI Tuner, you will tap on the Quick Settings option. Then you will see a Quick Settings pane that will allow you to rearrange, add/remove tiles in the Quick Settings. And that’s about it.

The tiles that can be added include invert colors, cast, hotspot, and Broadcast tile. Not a whole lot to choose from. But at least now you are able to customize these tiles. Something you couldn’t do previously. This is a feature that many custom ROMs had enabled with Android 5.x Lollipop, however, so it’s nice to see it finally make it to stock Android, and you don’t need to root or edit any files. Like you did on Lollipop to get the battery percentage (still crazy that there isn’t one on stock Android just yet), however that is also inside the System UI Tuner for those that want to add that battery percentage to your status bar, which is probably everyone.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow began rolling out this week, and will continue its rollout over the next few weeks. So if you haven’t gotten your update on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 or Nexus Player, be patient, it’s coming.
