How many times have you dropped your smartphone? How many times have you shattered a display? That’s probably something you don’t want to talk about. But it happens, to all of us. Motorola has been hard at work at developing a way to keep this from happening. This morning, Motorola and Verizon teamed up to announce the Droid Turbo 2 and the Droid Maxx 2. Now the Droid Maxx 2 is their cheaper smartphone with a huge battery that will be going for $16/month. But the Droid Turbo 2 is their real flagship. Coming with a 5.4-inch QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and the choice of either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

So how exactly is Motorola able to have a shatterproof display? It uses Motorola’s Shatter Shield technology. It’s an integrated system made up of five layers. Starting with a rigid aluminum core. Along with an AMOLED flexible display. Being flexible it can absorb the shock. There’s also a dual touch layer with redundancy typically a problem when you drop your phone and the touchscreen doesn’t always work perfectly. An interior lens is also included, and an exterior lens which protects the display from dents and scratches. On stage, Motorola’s Rick Osterloh dropped the Droid Turbo 2 on a set of concrete bricks and it didn’t shatter. Which definitely will make a lot of people optimistic.

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 will be available on October 29th at all 1600 Verizon retail stores throughout the country. The Droid Turbo 2 is also available through Moto Maker which means you have the choice of ballistic nylon and leather backs for the Droid Turbo 2. The Droid Turbo 2 will cost you $26 per month for the 32GB model and $30 per month for the 64GB model. The Droid Turbo 2 is exclusive to Verizon here in the States, but we may see it launch internationally further down the road. In fact there are already rumors of the Moto X Force coming soon. So we’ll be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, we’ll be checking out the Droid Turbo 2 here in the States, and it’s shatterproof display.
