It’s been a good little while since Verizon got rid of their unlimited data plans. However, thanks to their users signing a contract, Verizon can’t legally take away their unlimited data. But they can make it tougher on them. Verizon has already made it so that users will need to buy the phone outright to upgrade and keep their unlimited data plan and now they are looking to raise their unlimited data plan even more. By an additional $20. According to Chris Welch of The Verge, who has unlimited data with 450 voice minutes, this raise in price would put his bill to around $120/month, with data alone being $60. And if you have unlimited data or the old 900 voice minutes, it’ll be even higher.
Now this part is also important, this change only applies to those that are out of contract. If you are still on a two-year contract with unlimited data (which there shouldn’t be too many of you), you still get to keep your current pricing, until that contract runs out. Verizon has also said that corporate and government accounts won’t be affected by this raise in price for the unlimited data plans, luckily.
It’s clear that Verizon wants to get everyone off of their Unlimited Data plans. Now Verizon will likely say this is to ensure a great network for everyone, because unlimited data users can hog all of the data on their towers in certain areas – which can be true to an extent – but the bigger issue here is that Verizon wants to charge you for each gigabyte of data that you use. Which they charge $10 per gigabyte over the data limits that they have available, and for an unlimited data user, that could add up pretty quickly.
Keep in mind that this is still a rumor (although reported by The Verge, so it’s likely true) and that Verizon has not confirmed this price hike just yet. Of course, as soon as it is made official, we’ll be sure to update all of you and let you know exactly what’s going on with Verizon and the grandfathered unlimited data plans.
Update: Verizon reached out to confirm this, here is their statement:

This change will allow Verizon to continue to maintain the highest network performance for all our customers, while still providing great value for access to the nation’s reliable wireless service.
