Marshmallow update time is upon us and most Android OEMs are coming out with definitive plans to upgrade their smartphones and tablets to the latest flavor of the world’s most popular mobile operating system. While some vendors like Motorola, Asus and OnePlus etc. have officially announced their schedules and / or their device lists, some like Samsung have yet to do so. Now however, some reports floating around on the internet seem to claim that Samsung already have an official list that is available internally within the company. The list of course, is not final and binding, so devices not on the list might also be added later. As for the leaked memo, it seems to indicate that the update rollout will be staggered one, with Phase 1 commencing as early as next month.
As can be seen from the image above, newer flagships launched over the past two years are expected to get the update in the first phase. That includes the Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920G) and Galaxy S6 Edge+ (SM-928G), both of which are expected to receive Marshmallow next month itself, while the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920I) and Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925I) are scheduled to receive the update in January, 2016. As for the two phablets launched last year, Note 4 (SM-910G) and the Note Edge (SM-915G), the leaked memo seem to indicate that the Marshmallow update for those two devices will arrive in February next year. The Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H), however, is likely to see Marshmallow only in April, if the report is to be believed.
As for the second phase, select models from the Galaxy A, Galaxy E and Galaxy J lineups from the company are expected to be updated to Android 6.0. Only the Galaxy A8 however, has been approved to receive the update, with the rest being listed as “Waiting Approval”. The update for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 has also been approved, whereas the Tab S 8.4 is still waiting for its update to be Okayed. There’s no ETA given for the third phase though, with the Galaxy Tab A (both 8-inch and 9.7-inch models) listed as “Waiting Approval”. It might however, be end of the road for the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, at least as far as major version updates are concerned, seeing as updates for both devices are said to be “Not Approved”. While two separate sources are hinting at basically the same report, it is still advisable to take it with a pinch of salt for now, in the absence of any official confirmation from Samsung.
