Through a post on its website, Sprint, the fourth largest wireless carrier in the US, has announced that it is in the process of rolling out the Android 5.1 update to the original Moto X, which was released by Motorola back in 2013, while it was still owned by Google. According to the post on Sprint’s official website, the update started rolling out on the 5th of this month, and comes with software version LPA23.12-39.10. The new software brings along the first taste of Android Lollipop for the company’s 2013 flagship, and also includes a security patch for the much talked-about vulnerability found within the multimedia library of Android, called Stagefright. The device was thus far stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat, which was rolled out to the handset back in August of last year.

Unfortunately for the users of the Moto X 2013 though, this looks to be the last major update in store for the device, seeing as this particular model is not on Motorola’s initial list of devices that are scheduled to receive the Marshmallow update at some stage. Minor bug-fix and security updates however, will likely still come, but users wanting a taste of Marshmallow on their 2013 Moto X handsets through a standard OTA update may be out of luck. As for the current update that has apparently gone live, users are reportedly already beginning to get notifications on their handsets, but users can also check manually by accessing Settings > About Phone > System Update.

The first generation Moto X was introduced by Motorola back in 2013, when the company was still a subsidiary of Google, as already mentioned. As such, the handset was the first device designed and manufactured with direct inputs from the authors of Android. The device features a 4.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen and originally came with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, but has since been updated to Android 4.4 KitKat as already mentioned. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, and comes with 2 GB RAM, alongside either 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. The imaging options on the device are taken care of by a 10-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. The handset sports a non-removable 2200 mAh li-ion battery, and supports LTE connectivity.
