Micromax is the largest India-based smartphone OEM out there. This company is selling their devices in India exclusively, and they’ve actually formed a second company back in December 2014. The company’s name is YU, and they’ve released four smartphones thus far. It is important to note that YU operates completely separate from Micromax. Anyhow, YU has released Yureka, Yuphoria, Yureka Plus and Yunique entry-level and mid-range handsets, and they’re expected to release their first flagship in the coming weeks, the YU Yutopia. The company has already confirmed that the device is coming, all we’re waiting for at the moment is the official announcement.

That being said, YU has released an official statement recently, aimed at Android developers The company is trying to get developers to make AOSP Android M ROMs for all of their devices. “We are beginning the YU developer challenge 6.0, which is to challenge all you know and come up with AOSP- Android M OS. We will support you with all the tools that may need during this process-Tutorial, guidance, devices….Anything that helps you accomplish this,” said YU. The interesting part in all this, YU will actually support the best ROM, and the top three ROMs for each category will win prizes. The top placed ROM for every single of YU’s devices will win 1 lakh, the second placed developer will get Rs. 50,000, and the third placed one will get Rs. 25,000.

YU has decided to clarify that they’re not looking for CM ROMs by saying the following: ”Please submit AOSP Android-M bring-up with minimum hacks,” said the company. Now, there is a deadline for submissions, YU said that developers have until December 10th to apply for this contest and will then have a two-week testing period after that. Now, this is an interesting move by YU, that’s for sure. This company usually ships their devices with Cyanogen OS pre-installed, but have also re-released some of them with stock Android on top. There were even some rumors that Cyanogen and YU will part ways, but the company has denied such reports. Either way, it remains to be seen what happens next, stay tuned.
