Back in the beginning of December Android 6.0 Marshmallow was starting to hit various carrier branded Moto X Pure Edition 20 15 devices, moving them off of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to the latest version of Android. While those updates are likely still flowing in and reaching the users who may not have yet received the software upgrade, Motorola has also now pushed out the Android 6.0 kernel source files for the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition. While this might not seem like much to the average user, this is great news for the developers and tinkerers as they now have another tool they need to work with the software.

This means anyone who likes to poke around the Android software can use the kernel source files to help build and create new and exciting software experiences for the Moto X Pure Edition, whether it’s ROMs or just other small system tweaks and customizations. While this doesn’t mean much for the general Android user in the short term, in the long run it’s also good news for those who like to flash custom ROMs since developers will need to kernel source files to help create such things. It can also be used to help optimize the software and improve the overall user experience for devices that are already running on custom builds, so eventually, even regular Android users will be able to benefit from these.

For developers looking to grab the files and begin work with them, they can be picked up over at Github and there are two files to grab. A tar.gz file weighing in at 116MB, and a zip file weighing in at 145MB. The Moto X Pure Edition isn’t the only device on Motorola’s list of devices which has gotten Android 6.0 Marshmallow recently, as various users over on Reddit reported seeing Marshmallow updates coming into their 2015 Moto G devices. If you have either of these devices and haven’t yet seen the update come through, patience is key here as it may still take a few days for something to pop up, although this is less the case with the Moto X Pure Edition as those update began around December 8th.
