As a weird as this is going to sound, it actually happened. Qualcomm, who creates the series of Snapdragon chipsets for many phones has renamed two of their chips. The Snapdragon 618 and the Snapdragon 620 are now called the Snapdragon 650 and the Snapdragon 652. Qualcomm just didn’t do this randomly, they have their reasoning. If we look down the line, Snapdragon has chips dubbed the 615, 616, and 617. According to Qualcomm they wanted to differentiate the chips so in order to do that they renamed the 618 and the 620. If this is the case, then the 650 and the 652 are indeed much better and faster chips than the rest that follow behind them.

So how does this affect phones? Well it doesn’t, whichever devices were to come equipped with a 618 and a 620 chipset will just have a renamed processor. One smartphone in particular, is the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4, which is probably the first smartphone to have its chipset renamed. Recently GFXBench benchmark results for the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4. With a large 5.5-inch display and 1080 x 1920 screen resolution, the Idol 4 rocks a Snapdragon 652 chipset. The renamed chip has an octa-core 1.8GHz CPU and a Adreno 510 GPU. Keeping everything steady is 3GB of RAM that runs alongside 16GB of native storage. 16GB may not seem like a lot, especially when you have a 16MP rear camera. Your front facing camera for all of those Snapchat selfies is 8MP. According to the Benchmark test, the Idol 4 can produce 5.4 fps when it came to the Car Chase offline test. The fps went up t0 5.9 when it came to the online Car Chase. In the end, we can simply say we’re dealing with an alright camera.

Going back over everything, we have two renamed Snapdragon chipsets so they can be better differentiated. In addition, one of those chipsets which is the Snapdragon 652 sits inside of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4. Benchmark tests indicate some great specs for the yet to be released device, such as its CPU, GPU, and 3GB of RAM that should keep everything running smooth. Whenever the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 4 becomes available, we’ll finally be able to cover everything about this phone from its renamed processor to its performance.
