Huawei India has announced that it has started rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the Honor 7 smartphone in the country. In a departure from custom however, users will have to register their handsets with Huawei to receive the updated software. The registration process meanwhile, will be a fairly simple one, and users will have to provide Huawei with their handset’s unique IMEI number along with the current Android version, to be eligible to receive the latest update on their respective devices. According to the Chinese OEM, the OTA update notification will reach registered devices within 24 to 48 hours of signing-up. There’s no word from Huawei however, as to why the company is taking this rather unconventional approach for what should otherwise be a routine procedure.

Coming to the Honor 7, the smartphone is the current flagship of Huawei’s Honor sub-brand, and is sold exclusively via online retailer Flipkart in India. The device is priced at Rs. 22,999 ($345) in the country, and is offered in two different colors – Fantasy Silver and Mystery Grey. The Honor 7 was originally released in China back in late June, and was an immediate hit amongst the smartphone buying public in the country, with Huawei claiming pre-orders of as many as nine million units within just one week. The smartphone features a 5.2-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a Full HD 1080p resolution, which gives it a 424 dpi pixel density. The device comes with 3 GB of RAM and either 16 or 64 GB of storage depending on the chosen variant. The device is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 935 chipset, which is designed in-house by Huawei. The chipset comes with an embedded Mali-T628 MP4 GPU and a 64-bit octa-core CPU that’s clocked at a maximum of 2.2 GHz.

As for the imaging options on the Honor 7, the primary rear-facing camera comes with a 20-megapixel Sony Exmor RS IMX230 sensor with phase detection auto-focus and a dual LED, dual-tone flash. The secondary selfie-cam meanwhile, comes with an 8-megapixel sensor. The smartphone comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop pre-installed, with Huawei’s proprietary Emotion UI 3.0 laid on top. The Honor 7 comes with Cat.6 LTE, and supports Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and NFC. The handset comes with an embedded fingerprint sensor and a non-removable Lithium-Polymer battery that’s rated at 3,100 mAh.
