Leaked Lenovo Marshmallow Update Appears

When Google releases a new version of Android, we typically see manufacturers doing one of two things. One, manufacturers will swiftly announce their own plans to release updates to devices to bring them to the new versions of Android. Sometimes these announcements are in the form of a deadline for when the device will receive the update, or perhaps a wider announcement where a business explains that it will be bringing the new version of the Android operating system to its portfolio of devices soon. And sometimes, manufacturers keep quiet on the new release of Android until a device of theirs is either ready to receive the update, or is being launched with the new software version onboard. In the case of Lenovo, it has been the latter: Android 6.0 Marshmallow is being adopted by manufacturers but to date, no Lenovo devices have officially received the upgrade, nor have we heard anything from the business about their plans.

Lenovo are one of the largest mobile device manufacturers in the world, and whilst the Lenovo brand may not be all that familiar a sight in cell ‘phone stores to many of our North American readers, you will have seen Motorola – now owned by Lenovo. The business is using Motorola as the premium brand with devices for the Lenovo considered more mainstream; Motorola have a mostly good track record when it comes to releasing software updates for their devices. For Lenovo, we have seen a number of devices by Lenovo over 2015 but to date none are running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It also seems that none are to receive the update in 2016 as a leaked roadmap image has appeared on Chinese social network, Weibo, which reports that Lenovo’s smartphones will be receiving the update from next year.

This image shows that the Lenovo K3 Note is the first device set to receive the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, scheduled for some time in March 2016 for the international version. Following the K3 Note, the Chinese Vibe X3 and Viba P1 are next in the queue, also scheduled for March 2016. Between April and July 2016, the international A7000, A7000 Plus, Vibe P1, Vibe S1 and Vibe X3 are expected to receive the update to Marshmallow. Unfortunately, we have no details on Lenovo’s range of interesting tablets or on their other devices, but should additional news surface we will let you know.
