Samsung’s smartphone strategy of having something for everybody has served it well thus far, but except for its premium handsets, most of its devices are basically sold by the company on an as-is-where-is basis, whereby software updates are almost always hard to come by. Even the company’s premium handsets take their own sweet time getting the latest software, which has often been a major cause for concern amongst large sections of the company’s customers. Even when software updates do come through, there are often reports of major bugs that apparently go through unnoticed, thereby causing major heartburn amongst the company’s sizable customer base.
Now, in a sign that the company may be finally be willing to do something a little out of the box, Samsung Electronics is reportedly inviting South Korea-based users of its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones on KT and LG U+ networks, to join a beta-testing program for the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. This would allow the company to hopefully get a more comprehensive feedback before the software transitions from ‘Beta’ to ‘Stable’, and gets rolled out to millions of unsuspecting users. Currently however, the program is limited to South Korea only, as the Dutch unit of Samsung has reportedly told SamMobile that the company has no plans to introduce the beta-testing program in Europe.
While the S6 and the S6 Edge will have their new firmware verified by an army of volunteers who’re ready to play guinea pig for the sake of science, there’s no word on whether Samsung will introduce a similar program for its two phablets that it launched in the second half of this year – the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Either way, those interested in applying to be a beta-tester for Samsung’s Marshmallow firmware for either of the two devices, can head over to either the Google Play Store or the Galaxy Apps Store, and download the Galaxy Care app, through which, you’ll be able to apply for a position as one of the volunteer beta-testers for the company. The public beta-testing phase will reportedly go on till the 18th of next month, so there’s not a chance that the gadgets will be receiving Marshmallow any time soon.
