Marshmallow update time is upon us and a number of Android OEMs like Samsung and HTC are on the verge of rolling out the latest and greatest flavor of the world’s most popular mobile operating system to their smartphones and tablets. Other vendors like Motorola, Asus and OnePlus etc. have also officially announced their schedules for the Android 6.0 rollout, but there wasn’t much known about the Marshmallow plans of Sony, makers of the Xperia range of smartphones and tablets. Now however, leaker @Ricciolo1 has posted a tweet claiming that the Japanese multinational consumer electronics giant will start updating its Android devices to the latest version of the OS, come January next. According to the tweet, the latest flagship range from the company, the Xperia Z5 series, will receive the update first, followed by a bunch of other devices over the next few weeks.
The post made by @Ricciolo1 this Wednesday on microblogging site Twitter, however, doesn’t seem to mention which other Xperia models will get the taste of Marshmallow. Neither does it give an exact ETA for the update to start rolling out. All it says is, “As i said,an update has come yesterday, #marshmallow READY next month for #sony #z5 family..older #xperia models to follow shortly..”. Now obviously, this is far from a confirmed report and Sony is yet to make an official announcement on this matter, so readers will do well to take a wait-and-watch approach because nothing is set in stone just as yet. Hopefully though, owners of Xperia handsets will start seeing the Marshmallow update notifications on their phones next month onwards.
While Marshmallow is only an incremental upgrade over Lollipop, it does come with a number of nifty little features like an app permissions manager, native support for fingerprint scanner, Google Now on Tap, an all-new app drawer, more intuitive volume controls and of course, the battery saving feature called ‘Doze’ that disables network access for low-priority apps when the phone’s not in use. The latest version of Android also includes native support for 4K display resolution, so it would be interesting to see if the Xperia Z5 Premium goes full-time 4K after the update, or if battery-life concerns continue to hold Sony back from implementing the feature on its current flagship phablet.
