Motorola officially launched the DROID Turbo 2 towards the end of last year, and since that time it has been gaining recognition as a strong device with decent hardware, thanks to the ShatterShield display, rear camera and good battery life. Almost a few months later, Motorola is now sharing the open source Android 6.0 Marshmallow kernels for the device so that developers can get their hands on them and do with them as they wish. What this boils down to is some of the necessary tools that developers will need to get started on working with the Android 6.0 software on the DROID Turbo 2.
While this isn’t too useful for the average user in its current form, should developers take the source kernels and use them to optimize applications, then this ends up resulting in a benefit to the average user. Source kernels can also be used to make custom ROMs for those who like to tweak and customize their devices with aftermarket firmware, assuming those users have a device with an unlocked bootloader and a root access before trying to flash said custom ROM.
For the developers who wish to get a hold of the open source kernels, the files can be found over on Github where Motorola has uploaded them. A quick trip to that page will allow developers to pick up both the 145MB zip file and the 116MB tar.gz file. As stated above, neither of these will do any good for the average DROID Turbo 2 user, but they could be extremely useful to any developers who have been waiting on Motorola to release the files. As for the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow software update for the DROID Turbo 2, Motorola has yet to unleash it on the public, so Verizon subscribers have yet to lay get a hold of the update on their own devices. However, back in the middle of December, Motorola did start pushing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the Employee Edition of the DROID Turbo 2, which meant some Verizon employees were getting it rather quickly. As of right now there is no exact date for the public release of the software.
