The long wait for Samsung smartphone owners to get Marshmallow on their handsets is now finally over. According to an official announcement from Samsung Electronics, the Android 6.0 update is now finally here for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The update will roll out to users of the two said devices globally, meaning, whether you’re in Boston or Beijing, San Antonio or San Marino, you’re likely to get the update notification soon enough on your device. The company has also said that it will soon be rolling out Marshmallow to some of its other devices, provided of course, they are compatible with the latest and greatest version of Android. There is, however, no word on which particular devices have made the cut to get Marshmallow, and which ones haven’t.
Samsung’s press release also says that it will “make separate announcements on details of OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers’ requirements”. Also, unlocked models might get the update sooner than carrier-locked variants, which is of course, to be expected, seeing as that has always been the case across OEMs. With the latest incoming software, owners of the Galaxy S6 Edge can expect some cool new functionality for the ‘edges’ of their devices. Marshmallow will allow users to increase the width of the curved edge to 550 pixels from the current 260, which will enable more content to be displayed on the curved area. While Samsung hasn’t provided an exhaustive changelog, the latest update is expected to bring along standard Marshmallow features like Google Now on Tap, an all-new app drawer and an app permissions manager.
Samsung has been beta-testing it’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Marshmallow ROMs for a while now, so the full release of the final stable version isn’t exactly unexpected. If anything, the company is one of the last remaining major Android vendors to be rolling out Marshmallow to its 2015 flagships, now that LG, HTC and also Sony have updated their last year’s premium handsets to Android 6.0 over the past few weeks. While the company is yet to announce when the update for Galaxy Note 5 will come along, hopefully, it won’t be long before the owners of Samsung’s flagship phablet too will get Marshmallow on their handsets.
