Samsung’s Gear VR is likely the most popular virtual reality headset, outside of Cardboard. And it just keeps getting better and better. The Gear VR is made by Oculus which is owned by Facebook, which means that there are tons of games available for the Gear VR already. And we’re starting to see a number of great apps coming to Gear VR. Today, Hulu is the latest to join that list of apps. So if you own a Gear VR you’ll be able to watch content from Hulu in virtual reality. However it’s worth pointing out that the content in itself isn’t actually in virtual reality. But what you get is a virtual living room, so to speak. So you have a TV in front of you, showing whatever you’re watching on Hulu, but as you look around, you’ll see a virtual living room. It’s a pretty neat experience.
Now just because the majority of their content is not in VR, but rather 2D, doesn’t mean it all is. Hulu touts that they have over 25 videos that are made exclusively for use with VR headsets like the Gear VR. This includes videos from companies like Showtime, National Geographic, Discovery and many others. Hulu also worked with Lionsgate to bring a short film to VR, titled “The Big One”. It’s a great short film to check out on Gear VR.
Samsung has been giving out their Gear VR headset to everyone that pre-orders the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge in the US (and a few other regions). The promo is actually over, but Samsung has decided to extend the promo and add in the Gear S2. So those that buy the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge can choose between getting the Gear VR with a six-pack of games from Oculus, or a Gear S2 3G. Both of which are pretty nice gifts to get from Samsung for buying either of their new flagship smartphones. The Gear VR headset only works with Samsung’s smartphones, unfortunately. It’ll work with the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. For those that might be interested, it normally retails at $99 each.
