BlackBerry’s first-ever Android smartphone, the BlackBerry Priv, was launched last year with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on board. While the device gets frequent updates from its Canadian vendor, most of those relate to security, which is obviously one of the biggest selling points for BlackBerry. However, even as many OEMs from around the world have been updating their respective flagship smartphones and tablets to the latest flavor of Android, BlackBerry has continued to remain conspicuous by its absence from the list of device makers who are rolling out Marshmallow goodness to their respective smartphones. However, if a new video on YouTube is anything to go by, users of BlackBerry’s premium smartphone may not have to wait too long before getting the much-awaited update on their devices.
The video, which was uploaded to the aforementioned video-sharing site by ‘XL Gadget’ on Wednesday (March 30th), purports to show the latest stable version of Android (6.0.1 Marshmallow) running on the BlackBerry Priv. One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no way to judge the veracity of the video at this point in time, neither is there any report of BlackBerry starting to roll out any beta versions of the new software to select groups of users. So even if the video is legit, there’s way to know how the user got the software on their phone to begin with. That being the case, there’s also no way to tell when the company will actually roll out the final, stable version of its Marshmallow-based ROM to users worldwide.
Of course, rolling out Marshmallow to the BlackBerry Priv is not the only thing on the Canadian company’s agenda at the moment, if earlier reports are to be believed. According to rumors, the company is apparently gearing up to launch an all-new Android-powered smartphone this year as a follow-up to the Priv. While not a whole lot is known about the upcoming device, some reports have claimed that it will be codenamed “Vienna“, just like the Priv originally had the codename “Venice”. While there’s no official confirmation from BlackBerry on that front, the CEO of BlackBerry, Mr. John Chen, had previously gone on record about the company’s plans of releasing a mid-range Android smartphone if the Priv became a success.
