The Motorola Moto E (2014) was Motorola’s first attempt to bring out a capable, yet an incredibly cheap device. For the most part, it is a solid smartphone for those expanding nations whose users simply could not afford a flagship device or for those prepaid customers looking for a 4G LTE bargain device. In February 2015, the Moto E (second gen or 2015) was released in two variants – a 3G model and 4G LTE model – with the latter model sold in Canada. We are happy to announce that our source received word that Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s Over-the-Air (OTA) update is now being pushed out at Telus and Koodo – but Wind, Videotron and other Canadian carriers should shortly see the upgrade. Besides the Marshmallow update, the OTA also includes the February 1, 2016 security patch, making the upgrade 520MB in size. If you have not yet received your upgrade, you can ‘force’ it by going to your Menu -> Settings -> About Device -> Software Update -> Update.
The Moto E 2015 will cost you about $160 outright or $0 if you sign a contract. It sports a 4.5-inch IPS LCD qHD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels or about 245 pixels-per-inch (PPI). It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. It packs 1GB of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of internal memory that is expandable via a microSD card. From its specs, the Moto E will not be your go-to when it comes to gaming, but for Facebook, Twitter, Google + and other main apps, it will work just fine. The main camera is 5MP that can take 2560 x 1920 pixels and 1280 x 720 pixels and 30 frames-per-second (fps) and the front-facing camera (FFC) is a VGA for an occasional selfie. It packs a 2390mAh non-removable battery that will certainly get you through a day.
The Moto E 2015 measures 129.9 x 66.8 x 12.3 mm and weighs in at 145 grams. It originally came with Android 5.1 Lollipop and only the 4G LTE model is scheduled for Marshmallow, so it is nice to see it finally arrive in Canada. It has the usual suspects – WiFi, Bluetooth v4.0 LE, GPS, an FM Radio and a microUSB v2.0 port for charging and data transfer.
