Samsung’s Galaxy S line of premium smartphones is now seven years old, with the original first-generation Galaxy S having launched back in 2010 with Android 2.1 Eclair on board. No one could have predicted back then than the line will soon become the single most well-known Android smartphone range globally and deliver some of the most well-loved and best-selling Android smartphones in the years to follow. Of course, the Galaxy Note line of large-screen phablets have also become wildly successful for Samsung over the years, but notwithstanding their popularity, the Galaxy S line still remains one of the preeminent lineups of smartphones as of 2016, and by the looks of things, it’s likely to remain that way in the foreseeable future.
Minor history lesson over, let’s get to the fifth generation Galaxy S handset from Samsung – the Galaxy S5 – which was launched by the South Korean consumer electronics giant as its flagship handset back in early 2014. The device was only the second smartphone from Samsung after the Galaxy Note 3 to feature a full HD 1080p display panel and came with the then-latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat pre-installed. It has, since then, received multiple software updates, meaning that most models of the device around the world currently run on Android Lollipop. However, for those waiting patiently for the official version of Marshmallow to roll out to the Galaxy S5, Samsung now has some good news. In South Korea, the Galaxy S5 on one of the country’s leading wireless carriers – LG Uplus – is reportedly receiving Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
As for more details regarding the incoming update, reports indicate the version of the Galaxy S5 that is receiving the new software comes with the model number SM-G900L. The update package comes with a March 14th build date, but there’s no word on how large the download will be or how long it might take for the update to install. However, seeing as this is a major update, it is quite likely going to be pretty large update. Along with the usual native Marshmallow features, the new update is also expected to bring a newer, lighter iteration of TouchWiz from Samsung. Those still waiting for the update notification to arrive on their devices can check for it manually by going into Settings > About Device > Software Updates.
