Verizon will start rolling out the much-awaited Marshmallow update to the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones on its network starting Friday, April 1st, as per two separate postings on its official website. While big red hasn’t always been the fastest to roll out updates to its devices, quite a few Verizon handsets have received Marshmallow over the past few weeks, including the Galaxy Note 5 from Samsung, the Droid Turbo 2 from Motorola, and the G3 and G4 smartphones from LG Electronics, to name just a few. The carrier has also released a fairly detailed changelog, saying that the update “brings the latest Android Marshmallow OS along with improvements to Live Broadcast, easier app searches and updates to the Notification panel”. The Galaxy S6 Edge additionally comes with some enhancements to its ‘Edge panel’, according to big red.

Coming to some of the details regarding the incoming updates, Verizon says that the new Marshmallow-based ROM for the Galaxy S6 comes with software version MMB29K.G920VVRU4CPC2 while the Galaxy S6 Edge will be updated to software version MMB29K.G925VVRU4CPC2 following the installation of the incoming update. As Verizon is expected to roll out the new software in phases, it may take a while before everyone gets the notification automatically, but users should be able to check for the availability of the update manually by going over to Settings > About Device > Software Updates > Check for Updates.

As for some of the changes that one can expect after installing the new software, Marshmallow will come with enhanced search features, better battery life and additional privacy and security options. Verizon says that the update will carry forward the expected native Marshmallow features, such as Google Now on Tap, revamped app permissions, an all-new app drawer, and a battery-saving feature called Doze. Additionally, Verizon’s Live Broadcast feature is now easier to access, and the Quick Connect feature will now reside on top of the notification shade. Verizon also says that the update will bring along improvements to Wi-Fi Calling and have a “more seamless transition from Wi-Fi to network coverage while using mobile data, including on Network Extenders”. The update will also install Verizon’s Go90 app on the handset.
