There used to be a time when apps weren’t even something that we thought of using on our cell phones, but since the advent of the smartphone, apps are everywhere. They can help us get from A to B, hail a cab, order some fresh food and a whole lot more. For a lot of people, a Dictionary app is an essential, and for whatever reason Android doesn’t come with one installed, but there’s tons of choice in the Play Store. Easily one of the most popular – for American English speakers, of course – is the Dictionary.com app. Already one of the most simple and fully-featured, it’s now been updated with a new look and some extra functionality, too.
In the new version, which is 7.0 for the curious out there, Dictionary.com now has a fresh new look which better fits in with Android and has more of a focus on gestures. Users can pull up and swipe left and right to get more information and navigate through the app. Underneath this new facelift, the same Dictionary.com features that people know and love are still there, including the ability to use offline, the ever-classic Word of the Day feature and the ability to mark favorite words. There’s an interesting feature in Dictionary.com’s app that lets people see which words and definitions are “trending” wherever they are.
The headlining addition here however, is that Dictionary.com on devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and above will now define a word no matter where you are in Android. Whether or not you’re on the web or inside of another app – providing it allows for text selection – users can highlight a word, tap the three dots to the side of the clipboard pop-up to then “define” the word, which will take users to the Dictionary.com app and well, define the word. This is more of an update that brings the Dictionary.com app in line with the latest version of Android and with N just around the corner one could argue that they’re little late to the party, but this is a nice update to one of the more de facto Android apps around.
