Google Chrome is the most widely-used web browser in the world, with over one billion users on Android and iOS. While it may be the most popular browser, it does have its own drawbacks, such as webpage jumping. However, there is a fix for the said problem which many may not know about. Back in April of this year, Google introduced scroll anchoring during the company’s Progressive Web App Dev Summit. This feature was available only for Google Chrome Dev v51 builds. For those who might not know what scroll anchoring is all about, it basically is a feature that will prevent the webpage from jumping whenever offscreen content such images or ads are loading. This “jumping” is faced by many users and most find this annoying as it only serves as an inconvenience while web browsing. While this feature has been around for quite some time, many Google Chrome users do not know about it, simply because Google hasn’t put much effort in advertising it. It might be only a minor issue for light users of Google Chrome but it can get pretty bothersome for frequent users.
Well if you would like to fix this issue by enabling scroll anchoring, just follow these simple steps. To start off, open your Google Chrome browser and type in chrome://flags/#enable-scroll-anchoring into your URL address bar. This should bring you to a page with the words “Scroll Anchoring” highlighted in yellow. Once there, click on the list of options and just enable the flag. After doing so, close Google Chrome and relaunch the browser, you should no longer face this issue. At the moment, this feature is available on Android, Windows, Chrome OS, macOS and Linux.
However, do proceed with caution when enabling such features as all features under the chrome://flags page are considered experimental. Google has also warned all users that the features under the page may change, break or disappear. Once again, this is not a hack as Google itself launched the feature a few months back. There are many other experimental features in Google Chrome which most users do not know about as Google does not advertise them. An example of webpage jumping can be viewed in the video below.
