Leading accessories-maker Incipio Group today announced the acquisition of Griffin Technology, a well-known designer and manufacturer of rugged smartphone cases and other mobile accessories. The acquisition takes place just a couple of months after Incipio Group merged with Skullcandy Inc., a leading designer of headphones and earbuds which can be used with a range of devices from smartphones to PCs. Incipio Group by itself is a major accessories brand, and its acquisition of Griffin is set to put it among the top sellers of accessories in the coming days. With Griffin’s core business complementing its own, Incipio Group believes that the acquisition will strengthen its manufacturing capabilities and ‘reach a broader domestic and international audience through enhanced distribution in the business-to-business, enterprise and education verticals.’

Paul Griffin, CEO and founder of Griffin Technology, has been at the helm of the brand since it was formed in 1992. As per him, the acquisition means that the brand now has a strong support system and will thus have improved capabilities in the future. Griffin Technology will continue to function as a standalone entity and you will still get to buy Griffin products like you used to, except that you may encounter some new design concepts as a lot more people may now have a say on how the company designs, prices and sells its products. As of now, Incipio Group has not disclosed the amount of money it spent to acquire Griffin Technologies, nor has it talked about any change in strategy that it may implement in the future.

As you may have noticed, smartphone makers from across the world are now churning out new phones with waterproof and dustproof capabilities, shatter-proof displays and rugged components which make them quite sturdy compared to their predecessors. As such, things may get tough for rugged case-makers as phone buyers may not need their products anymore. The acquisition of Griffin may ensure that in such a scenario, the combined entity may shift its core business from rugged cases to headphones, car docks or even wireless chargers which are gaining prominence as we speak. However, both Incipio Group and Griffin Technology are well-known brands with a lot of fans around the world and it will be interesting to see how they will adapt to changing needs of their customers in the coming days.
