Last year was a big year for OnePlus, the OnePlus 2 helped take the company to new heights, and they also introduced their first device outside of their lineup of devices; the OnePlus X. Designed as a budget-minded device that still felt and performed like a premium device, the OnePlus X was something of an oddity for the Chinese firm, but one that people enjoyed nonetheless. Regardless of whether or not there is to be another OnePlus X launched this year, there are many users out there that still need to be supported with the latest software, and this is something OnePlus hasn’t gotten an exactly good track record of. For OnePlus X owners still waiting for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the news that a Beta build of OxygenOS 3.1 will be music to their ears.

As per the OnePlus forum post, a “Community Build” of OxygenOS 3.1.0 has been released, which is essentially a Beta build of the upcoming Marshmallow release for the OnePlus X. While users do not need to be rooted in order to put this new ROM on their device, they do need to be unlocked and already running OxygenOS and have the original OxygenOS recovery present, too. This means that, for a lot of average users, this build will be unobtainable, as unlocking your device usually requires a full wipe of your device, something many users are unwilling to do. Regardless, we can see from the changelog what this update brings with it, aside from the update from Android 5.1.1 to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow under-the-hood.

The launcher has been updated with a new icon pack, the Google Search bar sees some improvements and there are new apps in the form of the OnePlus Gallery and OnePlus Music Player. On the Marshmallow side of things, the OnePlus X running OxygenOS 3.1 will now ask permissions natively and there’s also the August 1st security pathches included, too. Those adventurous enough to try something like this can do so via the source link below, and those that are not-so-patiently waiting for the upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow can take comfort that this is yet another step closer to such an update.
