There were a number of announcements that came out of this year’s Google I/O event. One of the big ones was of course, Daydream, Google’s new take on virtual reality for Android. However, one of the other big announcements was the unveiling and introduction of Google’s two new apps, Allo and Duo. While they are different apps, they are united in their attempt to connect people. Allo does this by way of messaging and Duo does this in the form of video calling.
Since then, Allo has yet to become publicly available, although it is listed on the Google Play Store for those who want to register their interest. In contrast, Duo is out and since its release (a little under a month ago), it has been doing rather well. In fact, by the end of the first week of its release, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai was already taking to Twitter to let everyone know that Duo had already reached 5 million downloads. An impressive feat for an app which was about a week old.
Now, while Pichai has not been noted taking to Twitter yet, it does seem that Duo has reached the next major milestone in its Android domination. Namely, it has now surpassed the 10 million download marker. While this is another achievement (due to the age of the app) it is not quite as impressive as the first five million installs. While those first five million came in one week, it has taken Duo much closer to three weeks to achieve the next five million. So it does seem the initial excitement has waned a little over the weeks. Although by the measurement of any other app (barring the likes of Pokemon GO), 10 million installs in under a month is certainly impressive stuff. It will be just as interesting to see if Allo is able to achieve such quick levels of adoption once it is released.
