When Google Fit was first launched, there wasn’t a huge amount outside of tracking your daily step count and your runs that the service could do. Since then, it has become supported by more fitness trackers out there, become a more flexible API and added more features. Now, it appears as though Google isn’t resting on their laurels when it comes to bringing new features to their Fit service, as a new version of the app hides some secrets that will be coming in a future update or future updates. Features such as logging your hydration, tracking more exercises at hoem or in the gym, a new round icon and even data backup, too.
According to a new APK teardown from Android Police, the 1.61 version of the Google Fit app points to the future of Fit as a platform. As hinted at by strings inside of the new version of the Fit app that say things like “How many bottles have you had today?” and such it’s clear that the ability to log hydration is coming to Google fit in future updates, which is something that Fitbit and a myriad of other fitness tracking apps have had for some time now. On top of that, Google is readying more exercises to track at the gym, such as “clean and jerk”, “leg raise”, “chest fly”, “burpee” and a whole lot of other exercises found within some hidden strings inside of the APK. These exercises are likely to become part of entire workouts, and if Google give users the option to create their own workout by picking and choosing from these exercises, Google Fit might become more popular overnight. Elsewhere, data backup appears to be turned back on, after having been turned off in the previous of Google Fit, but it appears as though only those running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow or above.
Google Fit has long been in need of some more features, and while these are things that other people will already have in their preferred app, it’s a good sign, and goes to show that with the upcoming launch of Android Wear 2.0, these new features will help complete Google’s wearable equation a little bit more. When these new features launch is anyone’s guess, but considering evidence of them is already present in the latest version, they can’t be too far away.
