Cyanogen Inc. announced its plan for discontinuing Cyanogen OS and support for the CyanogenMod project just a couple of days ago. The death of Cyanogen OS means beginning of new problems for OEMs that relied on Cyanogen Inc. for providing software and security support for their smartphones. In case you’re not aware, the OnePlus One was the first ever device to come pre-loaded with Cyanogen OS, but that exclusive partnership didn’t last long as Cyanogen Inc. gave an exclusive right to use its Cyanogen OS to Indian smartphone manufacturer Micromax as well. Currently, Cyanogen OS can be found in Micromax’s Yu series of smartphones, Wileyfox’s entire smartphone range, and most notably Lenovo’s ZUK Z1 smartphone. Cyanogen Inc. has already made it clear in an official blog post that it will cease the support and development of all its services come December 31st, so it would appear that partner OEMs will start looking for alternative solutions to keep their smartphones updated with latest Android releases and security updates.

While many had speculated that Wileyfox‘ smartphones wouldn’t receive an official Android Nougat update due to discontinuation of Cyanogen OS, Wileyfox has now officially confirmed that it will update its entire range of smartphones with the latest version of Google’s OS, Android Nougat, in a timely manner, while still continuing to deliver Google’s monthly security updates. In a statement made available by Wileyfox’s representative to a customer, the company confirmed that it has agreed on a smooth transition where it will continue to deliver timely software and OS updates. The company said it will bring the new software update to its all devices, that includes: the Swift 2, Swift 2 Plus, Spark, Spark+, and the Spark X; so if you’re sporting any of the aforementioned devices, be sure that your device will, at least, be updated to Android Nougat in the near future.

The company also stressed that it’s pretty confident about its software’s future, adding that the software will continue to evolve and will stay pure to Android, hinting that the software will remain mostly stock Android. Unfortunately, the company didn’t reveal the exact timeframe of the update, but it did promise that it will share its full and final plan regarding software plan in due time.
