The Nexus 6 on AT&T’s network has reportedly started receiving the January security update from the carrier. The update comes in the form of a 26MB file that ships with the software version NBD91W. The security patch level is dated to January 5, 2017. According to a short changelog posted on AT&T’s website, the new software update introduces a number of security enhancements to the Nexus 6. Of course, being a regular security update, the new software doesn’t bring any new features nor does AT&T say anything about any critical bug fixes. Therefore, the Nexus 6 is still running Android 7.0 Nougat, having been updated from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow last month.
As is expected with Google’s contemporary Nexus devices, the Nexus 6 has been receiving its monthly security patches on a fairly regular basis over the past couple of years. The latest security patches packed into the January update are expected to plug various vulnerabilities and make the Nexus 6 on AT&T’s network even more secure. As is customary, the update is likely going to be rolled out in batches, so it might take some time before all users around the country start receiving the update notification on their devices. Users unwilling to wait too long may check for the availability of the update manually by heading into the Settings menu of their Nexus 6, choosing “About Device” and then tapping on the “System Updates” option.
The Nexus 6 was manufactured by Motorola and initially launched back in late 2014 as a successor to the LG-made Nexus 5 which was released the year before. The Nexus 6 features a massive 5.96-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) AMOLED display. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 system-on-chip which packs an embedded CPU with four custom Krait cores clocked at 2.7GHz. The phone ships with 3GB of RAM alongside either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, depending on the model. Imaging options on the Nexus 6 include a 13-megapixel rear-facing primary camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for selfies and video chatting. The Nexus 6 is powered by a 3,220mAh Li-Po battery and initially shipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop, meaning Nougat is likely the last major Android version officially released for this device.
