At CES 2017, we go hands on with the Huawei Mate 9, the company’s latest smartphone that they are bringing to the US. And the first Huawei-branded flagship smartphone in quite some time. While the company did announce the device back in November at an event in Munich, Germany, they had not released it in the US yet. But that has now changed as the Huawei Mate 9 is now available to buy. We are already fairly familiar with the Huawei Mate 9, having reviewed it last year, and with the US release, it’s mostly just more of the same. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, seeing as the Huawei Mate 9 is already pretty beastly.
When talking about specs, the Huawei Mate 9 features a 5.9-inch 1080p resolution display. It’s powered by Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor (which is an octa-core setup: quad-core 2.4GHz Cortex-A73 and quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A53), along with 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB of storage included in the Mate 9, and it does have a microSD card slot so you are able to expand the storage with up to 256GB of additional space. There is a pretty massive 4,000 mAh battery inside the Mate 9, which is non-removable, but it should last you the majority of your working day – as it did for us during our review of the device. The Huawei Mate 9 does use a dual-camera setup, and it is a Leica-branded camera once again. There is a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and then a 12-megapixel RGB sensor, which are fused together to create some pretty incredible images. It also creates some great looking bokeh effects, which most other smartphones are unable to do, without adding in a bit of noise.
The Huawei Mate line has always been known for having a big screen and a big battery, and that is exactly what the Chinese firm has done with the Mate 9 this time around. And it’s coming into the US at pretty much the perfect time, with the Galaxy Note 7 leaving a huge gap in the phablet market.
