The rumored Sony G3221 smartphone has been spotted on popular benchmarking website, AnTuTu. The listing reveals quite a few key hardware specs of the upcoming mid-ranger from Sony. According to the listing, the device will feature a 1080p display panel, but the exact size of the screen remains a bit of a mystery for now. Some unconfirmed reports, however, suggest that the handset may sport a 5.5-inch screen, although those reports are yet to be verified independently. The AnTuTu listing also indicates that the Sony G3221 will be powered by the MediaTek Helio P20 (MT6737) SoC, and will ship with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage out of the box. On the imaging front, the device will apparently sport a 23-megapixel camera on the back and a 16-megapixel camera on the front, while Android 7.0 Nougat will be pre-installed.
While not much else is known about the upcoming smartphone from Sony as of now, some leaked user profiles earlier this week seemingly suggested that Sony may be working on not one, but two mid-range smartphones currently. While the G3221 is seemingly the more premium of the two, another device, with model number G3112, is also believed to be in the works for the Japanese consumer electronics major to launch in the coming months. That particular device will also apparently be powered by the Helio P20, but will only sport a 720p display. While there’s no official word from Sony on either of these rumored handsets at this point in time, reports suggest that both devices may be unveiled at the MWC 2017 trade show next month in Barcelona, Spain.
With Sony’s smartphone business struggling to make money over the past several quarters, the company last year decided to cut back on the number of launches, concentrating instead on its premium Xperia X-series devices. However, if the new rumors of MediaTek-powered handsets are anything to go by, the Tokyo-based company may be reconsidering its decision to move away from the mid-range segment, seeing as much of the growth in the global smartphone market is coming from the prepaid segment, and that trend is likely to continue in the near future as well.
