The battery on the LG G6 will not be user-replaceable, according to the latest reports. Instead, the device will have its battery sealed within its metallic body, just like most premium handsets these days. That marks a significant departure from its predecessor, the LG G5, which came with a modular design that differentiated it from most of the other devices on the market, and allowed its 2,800 mAh Li-ion battery to be swapped out as and when needed. The upcoming device, meanwhile, was earlier reported to have ditched the modularity of its predecessor in an effort to present a more mainstream form-factor to potential buyers after the G5 failed to gain traction last year. The G6 is also expected to have Google Assistant out-of-the-box, making it the first smartphone outside the Pixel line to ship with the feature.
LG recently teased a waterproof design for its upcoming flagship, so whether the inclusion of that particular feature necessitated a fully sealed-off handset remains to be seen. The South Korean consumer electronics company has also announced one more important thing about the LG G6. It will feature a new 5.7-inch LCD display with a QHD+ pixel resolution and an unusual 2:1 aspect ratio. The panel will be manufactured by LG Display, which happens to be an LG group company and a sister concern for LG Electronics. While most modern-day smartphones carry 16:9 screens, Xiaomi’s recently-launched futuristic handset, the Mi MIX, ships with a similarly offbeat display with a 17:9 aspect ratio. Although most of the other key aspects of the upcoming device are still under wraps officially, recent rumors have seemingly revealed some key info about the upcoming device.
The LG G6 was often rumored to ship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the past, but a recent report suggested that might not be the case. This is due to Samsung apparently having placed such a massive order for the new SoC that there just won’t be enough to go around. The SoC is expected to power Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8. The report also claims that the demand-supply ratio is only likely to ease by April, which would have been way too long for LG to wait. Which is why the company’s next-gen flagship will be powered by the Snapdragon 821 which could place the LG G6 at a bit of a disadvantage against Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8.
