When it comes to being competitive in the smartphone industry, T-Mobile has always been able to hold its own. Towards the end of the year, the carrier released its end-of-year wrap-up; where it released valuable plans they have for the year ahead. One of the Uncarrier’s highlighted plans includes the hype surrounding the next generation in networks, 5G.
There’s no denying the truth about how hyped up 5G is. Despite its standard is undefined, it’s pretty clear that the networks will require constructing all-new infrastructure. The other mobile networks and smartphone manufacturers have already set a target for 5G’s debut. Most of these foresee that 2020 will be 5G’s big year. For the part of T-Mobile, however, this is something they did not specify. In its wrap-up, T-Mobile admitted that they will still need “several more years” until a proper roll-out for 5G will be witnessed by its users. Even though they have not set a timeline for 5G, T-Mobile promises that they will be fully ready for the network once it becomes available for commercial use. T-Mo was quick to point out that they are currently the only carrier in the country to feature up to 1Gbps speeds on its network. But prying further into this, it’s important to note that the speed can be achieved with a handset that is yet to be released. There still is a question on how well T-Mobile’s GB LTE feature will be able to handle traffic congestion once more devices will be connected to it.
Another announcement made by T-Mobile is that they already cover a total of 313 million people in the country, a number that’s just a million short from Verizon. This number isn’t the same as the total people the Uncarrier serves. Even though one million people is still quite a number, it’s pretty impressive for T-Mobile to be able to reach its numbers compared to the gap between Verizon and AT&T.
T-Mobile has also compared its LTE network download speed with other networks. Gathering information from Ookla, T-Mobile praised itself for being faster at 24.4 Mbps compared with the Verizon’s speed of 24.3 Mbps, AT&T’s speed of 23.9 Mbps, and even Sprint’s speed of 15.2 Mbps. These numbers make the Uncarrier very pleased about its performance as it enters a new year. The only thing that’s stopping them from completely celebrating is the fact that they have already been called out by the Netherlands for its zero-rating for music and video streaming.
