Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony has announced that up until February 19, it has sold around 915,000 units of its popular virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR. In a press release dated February 27, the President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Mr. Andrew House, said that the company is overwhelmed by the response to its VR headset, and is now increasing production because of growing demand from VR enthusiasts worldwide. Mr. House also said that the company expects the device to emerge as the market leader going forward, given that the PS4 console has sold over 53.4 million units globally ever since it was released in late 2013. He also promised to “continuously support content developers as they create innovative VR experiences that are only possible on PlayStation”.
According to the statement released by Sony Interactive Entertainment, there are currently over 100 software titles that are compatible with PlayStation VR, while around 220 more are in active development from over 360 developers and publishers worldwide. Some of the eagerly-awaited games that are expected to hit the PlayStation VR in the coming months include Ace Combat 7 and Tekken 7 from Bandai Namco Entertainment, the company that gave the world the wildly popular Pac-Man arcade game back in the early 80s. Some of the other titles expected to be available on PlayStation VR over the coming months include Final Fantasy XV from Square Enix, Steel Combat from Colopl, as well as a couple of in-house titles from Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SIE WWS) – Farpoint and Gran Turismo Sport. As for Steel Combat, the game will launch tomorrow in Japan, according to a recent announcement by the developer, Colopl. The game is already available on the Oculus Rift globally.
PlayStation VR, known originally by the codename ‘Project Morpheus’ during its development phase, was launched last October after it was officially announced at the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. The device came with an introductory price of $399 in the U.S. and competes in the market with devices like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. The PlayStation VR comes with a 5.7-inch OLED panel, which has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The headset also has nine positional LEDs on its surface for the PlayStation Camera to track 360-degree head movement.
