The Google Assistant will start rolling out to compatible devices running Android Marshmallow and Nougat today, the Mountain View-based tech giant announced. To commemorate the occasion, Google published an announcement video for its voice-enabled assistant on YouTube. The 30-second video is playful and succinct, like many other video promos Google recently released. The video itself is available for viewing below.
The Alphabet-owned company initially announced that the Google Assistant will be coming to third-party devices on Sunday. Google’s announcement made in the run-up to this year’s Mobile World Congress suggested that not all smartphones running the last two major iterations of the Android operating system will actually receive the AI companion. However, most high-end devices are expected to be updated with the Google Assistant, especially those running Android Nougat. The Google Assistant will make its way to compatible handsets via a Google Play Services update, the Mountain View-based company previously revealed. The wording of the original announcement also suggested that the United States will be the first country where the Google Assistant will roll out to third-party devices, meaning everyone else likely won’t receive the voice-enabled helper today. However, the English version of the assistant is also expected to soon hit compatible devices in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Additionally, a localized version of the Google Assistant will also be released in Germany in the coming weeks, Google said.
Today’s launch marks the first step in Google’s endeavor to bring its AI companion to as many devices as possible. The Google Assistant initially debuted on the Google Pixel and the Pixel XL last fall but was officially unavailable on other smartphones until now, not counting for the version that ships within the Google Allo messaging app. The Alphabet-owned company confirmed that the assistant will start supporting more languages and roll out in more countries over the course of this year. Therefore, more details on the availability of the Google Assistant are bound to be available shortly. In the meantime, if you suspect that Google’s AI companion should already be available in your country, make sure that Google Play Services on your device are up to date.
