T-Mobile announced the immediate availability of Android 7.0 Nougat update for the HTC One M8. The company’s official support site revealed that the carrier already completed the testing of the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the HTC One M8 and has started pushing out the package to its customers. The update itself was launched to some surprise from the general public given how the HTC One M8 is a phone that’s three years old now, having originally launched back in March of 2014. HTC previously said that the Android Nougat update will be hitting the HTC One M9, HTC 10, and the HTC One A9, but hasn’t mentioned the HTC One M8 itself. Regarding T-Mobile, the third largest wireless carrier in the country just released the Android 7.0 update for the HTC One M9 last week while the update for the HTC 10 launched in January.
The HTC One M8 is powered by the Snapdragon 801 processor, a chip no longer supported by its manufacturer Qualcomm. Some phone vendors like Google and Sony did not update a number of their older flagships due to this decision by Qualcomm. Some of the affected devices were the popular Nexus 5 and the Sony Xperia Z3. On the other hand, the HTC One M8 is not the only Snapdragon 801-equipped phone receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update, as the Lenovo ZUK Z1 was previously updated to the latest stable and major version of Google’s operating system.
Back when the HTC One M8 hit the market, it had some of the best hardware available at the time. The device initially shipped with Android 4.4.2 KitKat running out of the box and was already updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow around a year ago, meaning not a lot of people expected to see official Nougat support for the handset. Still, the unexpected ended up happening and Nougat is now gradually rolling out to all HTC One M8 units on T-Mobile. The package itself is being pushed out as an over-the-air (OTA) update so it’ll probably be a while before you get the notification prompting you to download the update, but if you aren’t willing to wait, you can always search for the update on your own from the Settings app of the handset.
