ViewRanger for Android Wear 2.0 started rolling out on the Google Play Store earlier this week and should now be available for download worldwide, mobile app developer Augmentra announced. The company’s new wearable app was developed in collaboration with Casio and was designed specifically for the recently released Casio Pro Trek smartwatch, though it also works with virtually any other wearable running the latest major iteration of Google’s operating system.

As its name suggests, ViewRanger is meant to serve as a companion app for hikers that either want some help with planning their routes or need assistance when trailing a specific path. The app ships with hiking maps spanning 23 countries including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, France, and Germany, all of which were crafted in great detail by some of most established outdoor publishers on the planet, Augmentra says. Apart from detailed topographic maps, ViewRanger for Android Wear 2.0 also features a compass and can download any map for offline viewing. The app’s tracking capabilities can be used to record one’s hiking trips for later reviewing, and all stats gathered by ViewRanger can also be displayed on the watch face of your Android Wear 2.0-powered wearable. Finally, the service is compatible with a number of third-party solutions including Google Fit, and support for more apps will likely be added in the near future.

The ViewRanger App for Android Wear 2.0 devices is available through an update to the ViewRanger Android app on the Google Play Store. While it’s capable of limited standalone operation, the app works best when paired with a smartphone, its developers claim, noting that any watch running ViewRanger can stream maps from a compatible Android smartphone. While that wasn’t explicitly mentioned, it seems that the mobile app is compatible with most smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat and newer versions of the open source operating system. The new update bringing Android Wear 2.0 support to ViewRanger is available for download free of charge, just like the app itself was so far.
