According to International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, China-based smartphone vendors are seemingly increasing their market share in India where 27 million smartphones from China have been shipped in the first quarter of 2017, representing a 14.8-percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2016, and a 4.7-percent increase from Q4 2016. The market research firm further revealed that China-based smartphone vendors have managed to strengthen their position in the Indian market, capturing a 51.4-percent share of all smartphone shipments in the country throughout Q1 2017.

The increased presence of China-based vendors in India over the first quarter of the year has reportedly changed other areas of the market as well. As a result, the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones increased to $155 in the first quarter of 2017, whereas a year ago the ASP of smartphones in India was hovering around the $131 mark. In addition, because 90 percent of smartphones originating from China are equipped with screens larger than five inches, the number of handsets in India whose displays are smaller than that dropped to 21.2 percent in Q1 2017, compared to 40.3 percent in Q1 2016. Interestingly enough, Q1 2017 was also the first time for a smartphone originating from China to become the highest shipped handset in India. That title goes to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 which reportedly out-shipped the top smartphone model in Q4 2016 – the Samsung Galaxy J2. IDC further revealed that 94.5 percent of smartphones shipped in India over the first quarter of 2017 offer 4G support, and that 62.2 percent of Chinese handsets shipped to India are equipped with 13-megapixel or higher-resolution primary cameras.

According to latest data, the top two smartphone makers in India – based on market share – are Samsung Mobile with a 28.1-percent share, followed by Xiaomi who managed to maintain the second place with a 14.2-percent market share. Vivo occupied the third spot with 10.5 percent of the market and was followed by Lenovo (including Motorola) with a 9.5-percent share. The fifth largest Indian phone vendor in Q1 2017 was OPPO whose smartphones accounted for 9.3 percent of the market. The remaining 28.3 percent of shipments was covered by all other smartphone vendors and brands. In overall, a total of 56.6 million smartphones shipped in India in Q1 2017, representing a 3.2-percent decrease from Q4 2016.
