The latest Google Maps beta has added a location history toggle which is supposed to help users get more accurate information about their commute updates. For example, say you’ve set up Google Maps to alert you to changes about the route you take during your commute to school or work. The new toggle, when enabled, would simply allow you to receive more accurate details in those updates when they come through, which is likely to be very useful if you rely heavily on this information during your commute so that you don’t get stuck in traffic and are able to make it to your destination on time. By using this location history information, Maps is able to give you better updates with more accurate commute times.
Also new in this latest update is a shortcut to the offline settings menu and options. Just as the name of the menu suggests, it takes you straight to offline settings where you’ll find toggles for things like auto-updating offline maps, auto-downloading offline maps, and setting your download preferences, and learning more about offline maps if you need to. Unlike before, offline settings can be found as a sub-menu from the main settings page which is likely to make it much easier to find for the majority of users, unless of course you never touched the offline settings anyways.
While these have been the only front-facing changes that users will be able to interact with, the latest beta APK also hints at some upcoming features which users will be able to look forward to. One of these is a potentially simpler interface for reviewing places in Maps. According to the details, it looks like Google will be allowing users to suggest places through a review to let others know they liked or didn’t like the place, with options for “recommended” or “not recommended,” instead of giving users the choice to give anywhere between one and five stars. There also seems to be a new option for selecting a preferred station to a commute or trip route so that users will automatically get results from that station first the next time they open up Maps to use directions and plan to take transit.
